Globus Pallidus — Function, Location & Quiz

The globus pallidus supplies the tonic brake at the heart of basal-ganglia logic. Internal pallidal neurons inhibit thalamus by default, so initiating a chosen movement requires the striatum to inhibit this inhibitor.

The internal and external segments are not interchangeable. GPi is a major final output to thalamus, while GPe participates in the indirect route through the subthalamic nucleus; separating them makes Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and surgical treatments easier to reason through.
